To Coat or Not to Coat?

Factory Finish

Tanks produced by Long Range Automotive are made using aluminized steel and at the end of the process, have a high-quality paint finish applied at the Lilydale factory. It is robust and durable.

Aftermarket Options

Some customers prefer to add supplemental finishes for various reasons. There are three basic options:

  • DIY spray-on
  • DIY roll-on
  • Professional bedliner

Reasons for an upgrade may include:

  1. Camouflage to conceal the presence of an auxiliary or after-market fuel tank (black vs. silver).
  2. Increased protection against road salt, chemicals, etc.
  3. Increased protection against rock chips, thrown stones and trail trauma.

Item “1” can easily be addressed with a can of Krylon or Rustoleum – either paint or undercoat products.  If that’s all you need, $20 or so will get the job done.

If you live in the snow belt, drive a lot of rocky roads or have other concerns about surface rust, physical damage or other external factors, then there are some other options.

There are some DIY solutions at the hardware and on Amazon, but they don’t come cheap – basically roll-on products that build a physical barrier for the truck bed, chassis or tank – whatever is being “painted.”

The problem is that you pretty much get what you pay for and if you need more robust solution the DIY solution may not work and then you end up having to remove all that “stuff” in order to move on to the professional solution

We are NOT taking a position that any one the three options – DIY spray-on, DIY roll-on or professional bedliner application, but we do believe in well-informed decisions, so check out online ratings and reviews.

There are several popular options for professional installation – Line-X and Rhino Linings. There are three things to consider in choosing a dealer-applied tank coating:

  1. Product – What is the product?
  2. Process – How is it applied?
  3. Professional – Reputation of the firm?

Once upon a time, the Rhino Linings option was seen as the “junior” solution, while LINE-X has generally had the “premium” reputation. Ratings and reviews for Rhino have improved.

We have experience with LINE-X and the product has held up well. No experience with Rhino Linings good or bad, so do your research. We have done LINE-X on several customer tanks prior to shipment but the cost is prohibitive, so we now recommend that purchasers have the work done locally, after shipping. The end-user or his/her dealer is better suited to manage the process, negotiate terms and oversee quality of the work.

Customer Review

My experience with LRA has been great! I was extremely excited when I realized they made an auxiliary tank for my 2006 4runner. I had to have one. The range of my truck was about 450 km/270 mi to 500k300 mi stock and with this upgrade I can now get a range of 1,200 km/720 mi before having to fill again. I can go deeper in the forest now and not have to worry about having enough fuel.

My review of the product extends to all aspects of LRA as I was the one who installed the unit into my truck, dealt with sales (questions before I purchased), and dealt with tech support for questions for the installation.

Ward’s response to my initial questions of the tank were very in-depth and he responded quickly. He provided a digital manual and links to videos to make sure I knew what I was getting into in regard to the install. The purchasing process was very smooth and luckily for me he had a tank already in the warehouse for me, so I received it quickly. When I received the product, the packaging with very adequate for protection during shipment. Wow – what a beautiful tank! It looks great! I do however wish I was painted black instead of grey so it could have blended in with my undercarriage better. Maybe in the future this could be an option.

During the install, referring to the install instructions was a little bit difficult at times as there was many different parts (hoses, connectors, etc.).  and the description of what part went were took some time to understand. I’m very good at figuring things out so for me it wasn’t that big of a deal. Also, there was a missing hose, but it was cheap and easy to get from my local automotive store.

The install went smoothly, and the end result was very slick looking, and it integrated very well with the truck. It fits so well; you’d think it was an OEM part!!! I did the install of this tank with an aftermarket bumper (CBI) and they worked together perfectly. Just keep in mind that the tank must be installed first before the bumper as they share the same bolts for mounting to the frame. The instructions said, I wouldn’t have to modify the exhaust pipe, but I ended up having to get some pipe work done for it to fit properly. This was maybe due to the fact that I had an aftermarket cat-back exhaust though I think the cat-back was totally identical to the factory system.

I needed some tech support from Ward regards to the wiring for the pump and for the module that starts the transfer of the fuel. He answered the phone on the first try, was very helpful and provided what I needed within minutes. I have confidence that if I needed support in the future that he would be able to help me.

When I finally filled the tank, and tried transferring for the first time, it worked without a problem. No engine codes. No issues at all. The pump is pretty slow at transferring fuel from one tank to another, but it doesn’t bother me. I usually transfer fuel when my main tank is only a 1/4 full and within about 30 minutes my main tank is topped off. I just came back from a 11,000 km/6,600 mi trip in Northern Canada on some rough and remote roads, and the tank worked flawlessly throughout this trip.

My 4 Runner is heavily modified and I think this by far the coolest modification I’ve done. This is a huge game changer for my truck! I’m extremely happy with the product on every aspect. Thanks very much Ward!!!

Cheers,

Andrew

LRAM COMMENTS

Andrew is too kind in his comments about our instructions. They are a work in progress and improvements are being made with the help of our customers, installing shops and dealers. No excuse for missing parts and that is an issue for the QA team. Many customers apply supplemental paint (Rustoleum is popular), as well as bedliner products, such as Line-X. Some of our dealers are also Line-X applicators such as RPM Performance in the Seattle area (https://www.maxrpmusa.com/).

We recommend local bed linter application due to cost and quality control. See our page post – “To Coat or Not to Coat?” here.
